Outdoor light distribution is a core part of outdoor lighting design because the same luminaire output can serve a site well or poorly depending on where the light goes. A street needs light along the carriageway and pedestrian routes, while a park path, loading yard or sports area needs its own distribution pattern. We use optical solutions to direct light toward the intended surface and reduce light outside the target area.

How outdoor light distribution directs light to the right surface

Light distribution describes the pattern in which a luminaire sends light into its surroundings. The optical lens shapes light from the LED module, so the choice of optics affects both the illuminated area and the direction of the beam. In an outdoor setting, this means matching the luminaire to the route, open area or structure that needs light instead of treating the whole site as one uniform space.

A long, narrow distribution can suit a road or footpath, where light needs to follow the direction of travel. A wider pattern can serve an open yard, park area or entrance zone. The aim is to place useful light where people move, work or orient themselves. Our optics and light distribution information includes light distribution files for most of our luminaires, which can support lighting calculations in design software.

The right optical distribution directs light to the surface where it is needed.

Outdoor light distribution for streets, parks and outdoor work areas

For streets and public outdoor areas, outdoor light distribution affects how consistently the route appears from one luminaire to the next. Pole spacing, mounting position and the width of the illuminated area all influence the required pattern. Motiva notes that a new luminaire’s light distribution and output should suit the existing pole spacing to avoid under- or over-dimensioning and to support even lighting conditions and glare control. Motiva’s outdoor lighting guidance provides further context for street-lighting projects.

In parks, the design often needs to distinguish between paths, gathering areas and surrounding greenery. In production facilities, warehouse halls and other industrial environments, light must reach the work area without sending unnecessary light into adjacent zones. We manufacture LED luminaires for demanding, long-term use and offer solutions for street, park, bridge, tunnel and industrial lighting. You can review the available product range in our product catalogue.

Outdoor light distribution works with optics and lighting control

Optics set the physical direction of light, while control can adjust the amount of light produced after installation. These two choices should support the same use case. A street or outdoor area may need a distribution that covers the intended route, with light output that can adapt to the operating situation. This keeps the focus on suitable illumination rather than excess output.

We offer intelligent lighting solutions alongside our luminaires, including eSave lighting-control products and systems. For projects with special requirements, we can also customise luminaires based on existing models, including production runs of fewer than one hundred units. Explore our intelligent lighting solutions when your outdoor project needs both selected light distribution and controllable lighting.
