A luminaire is purchased once, but paid for over twenty years.
A competitive tendering process rewards the lowest bid, yet the costs do not end at delivery. If a seal leaks, the control gear fails, or the light output drops prematurely, the cost of the aerial lift, electrician, and traffic management will each time be many times the price of the luminaire itself.
This is not merely a sales argument; it is a calculation that can be performed before a decision is made.
Four cost components, only one of which appears in the initial quote
Procurement: Luminaire and installation. This is the only item visible in the quotes—yet it typically accounts for just 10%–30% of the total cost.
Energy: Costs accrue every night throughout the product’s lifecycle. Here, optical precision and intelligent control systems are decisive: light must be directed exactly where it is needed, and in the precise amount required at any given moment.
Maintenance: Every service visit involves a lifting platform, an electrician, and often traffic management. Consequently, the maintenance interval is more important than the price of a spare part. Remote monitoring eliminates unnecessary inspection visits and alerts you to a failure before a resident calls to report it.
Lifecycle: Does the luminaire last 5, 10, or 20 years on average? How long does it continue to meet requirements? Is it possible to upgrade the components most prone to wear?
When all four factors are taken into account, the ranking often differs from that based on the purchase price alone.

Where our luminaires are at work
Streets and roads. Precise light distribution keeps light on the roadway and away from windows. Control systems reduce power output during the quiet hours of the night.
Parks and recreational areas. Pleasant, glare-free light with minimal light pollution. Bollards and street lights designed to withstand vandalism and time.
Bridges and underpasses. Exposure to moisture and vibrations. Locations with few luminaires and costly maintence visits—making low maintenance and long service life particularly important.
Sports fields and recreational areas. Adequate and uniform lighting levels throughout the season, with adjustable settings for different uses.
Courtyards of public buildings and institutions. Safety, illuminated walkways, and lighting suitable for video surveillance.
A short supply chain is a form of risk management
Our luminaires are assembled entirely in Finland, and we prioritize domestic sources in our supply chain whenever possible. The majority of our suppliers are Finnish companies; for instance, all the housing components and optics few use are also manufactured in Finland.
This is not merely a marketing point but a practical matter: spare parts are available, repairs are feasible, and a part needed ten years down the line won’t have vanished to the other side of the world.
In the context of critical infrastructure—which includes public lighting—this is an essential aspect of security of supply.

We help even when we don’t win the bid
A good request for proposals asks the right questions. If it focuses solely on the purchase price, the result is the cheapest luminaire—not the most cost-effective lighting solution.
We can provide the following as needed:
- lighting calculations for your project (Dialux), enabling you to set requirements based on actual figures
- lifecycle cost analysis to support your procurement justification
- technical documentation and compliance data in a ready-to-use package
- feedback on your draft request for proposal: which requirements should be specified and how they should be measured
