What should be considered when updating lighting in a production facility?

Start production facility lighting updates by mapping your processes, work areas and operating conditions. These three factors define what the new lighting must do before you compare any luminaire.

  1. Map the processes before the luminaires
  2. Take operating conditions seriously in production facility lighting
  3. Define the goal, then request a tailored solution

Production facility lighting depends on what happens on the floor, not on the size of the building. Before you request quotes, map each work area, the tasks done there and the conditions the luminaires will face. That gives you a clear starting point for the whole project.

Map the processes before the luminaires

Walk through the facility along the production flow. Note where people do precision work, where they operate machines, where trucks move and where nobody stays for long. Each of these areas places different demands on production facility lighting, and one uniform solution rarely serves them all.

Write down the shifts too. A line that runs around the clock needs luminaires built for long, continuous use. A storage area visited a few times a day may need lighting that responds to presence. Our intelligent lighting and eSave controls are designed for exactly this kind of differentiation.

A short brief with area descriptions, conditions and goals gives a lighting project a clear starting point.

Take operating conditions seriously in production facility lighting

Production halls are demanding places. Heat, dust, vibration and cleaning routines all affect how long a luminaire performs as intended. List the conditions in each area and bring the list to the supplier early. We design our LED luminaires for demanding, long-term use, and you can see one example in our case from Valmet.

Mounting height and room geometry matter as well. High bays need different optics and light distribution than low ceilings, and the right optics put light on the work surface instead of the walls. Check the existing fixing points and cable routes during the same walk-through, since they limit which solutions fit.

Define the goal, then request a tailored solution

Decide what the update should achieve: better visibility for demanding tasks, lower maintenance effort, controllable lighting or a combination. A short written brief with area descriptions, conditions and goals lets us propose a fitting solution quickly. You find our standard range in the catalog.

If your site has special needs, we can build customized luminaires based on existing models, even in batches of fewer than one hundred units. We assemble our luminaires in Finland. Industrial projects are described on our page for companies.
